Ah, the sweet taste of pickleball victory! As a seasoned coach passionate about this marvelous game, I’ve had the immense pleasure of guiding countless beginners down the path towards pickleball prowess. Today, I’ll share an exhilarating exploration of one of the most critical decisions you’ll face on the court: when to drop or drive on that all-important third shot. Strap in, my πŸ₯’πŸ₯’ friends, for we’re about to embark on a delightful journey into the realm of pickleball strategy!

An Ode to the Third Shot

The third shot in pickleball is a moment of pure magic – a tantalizing juncture where the rally hangs in the balance, poised between triumph and tragedy. To unravel the enigma of when to employ the delicate drop or unleash the ferocious drive, one must first understand the essence of these two shots and their unique roles in the grand symphony of the pickleball match.

The drop shot: a soft, floating arc, gently descending into the opponent’s kitchen with the grace of a ballet dancer. The purpose? To disarm and neutralize, allowing you and your partner to sashay towards the net in perfect harmony.

The drive: a powerful, aggressive stroke, zipping across the court like a lightning bolt. The aim? To catch your opponents off-guard, create a chaotic scramble, and snatch victory from the jaws of uncertainty.

A Question of Timing: The Drop or the Drive

Drop Positives
  • Neutralizes opponent’s attack vectors
  • Best way to control the net
  • A safe and effective way to start a point
Drop Negatives
  • Predictable
  • Overhit drops will get smashed down your throat
  • Underhit drops go in the net

As you stand at the baseline, paddle in hand, poised for action, the question lingers: when should you deploy these two remarkable shots? Fear not, my intelligent pickleball proteges, for the answer lies in the very fabric of the rally itself.

The Drop: A Serenade to Softness Embrace the drop shot when your opponents are hugging the net like long-lost friends, ready to pounce on any offensive opportunity. In this scenario, the drop shot becomes your secret weapon – a gentle whisper, luring them into a false sense of security as you and your partner glide effortlessly to the net. Additionally, when faced with a deep, well-placed return, the drop shot allows you to regain control of the rally with finesse and poise.

The Drive: Bang when appropriate

A Symphony of Power The drive, on the other hand, is the perfect choice when your opponents are off-balance or out of position. A high, floating return that beckons like a siren’s call, invites you to unleash the full force of your paddle. The drive’s power and speed can leave your opponents scrambling, opening the door for you and your partner to seize control of the court. But remember, my friends, that power must be wielded wisely – a poorly executed drive can spell disaster, gifting your opponents an easy put-away.

Bang Free
  • Can catch opponents off guard
  • Punish weak or high returns
  • Sets up 5th shot winners
Or Drive Hard
  • Risk of poaching
  • Good defensive players will eat it up
  • Very Risky on deep returns

Here is a classic case of a weak drive getting absolutely destroyed. I think the server here was indecisive and floated something between and drive and a dink that turned out to be the perfect meatball to get smashed at his partner’s feet. Even though they lost one point, smashes like this can be a morale killer and give some oomph to the opposition.
