Mastering the Kitchen Corner Serve: Your Pickleball Ace up the Sleeve

7

Welcome to the tactical world of Pickleball, where strategy and skill can make a world of difference. Today, we’re going to learn about an advanced serving technique that seasoned pros often keep up their sleeves – the ‘Kitchen Corner Serve.’

The Strategy behind the Serve

The Kitchen Corner Serve is more than just another serve; it’s a tactical power move designed to disrupt your opponent’s game. Its primary goal is to set your opponent off balance, force them out of their comfort zone, and set yourself up for an easy putaway. While it may seem daunting at first, given the precision it requires, with practice and patience, this serve can become a formidable weapon in your Pickleball arsenal.

Executing the Kitchen Corner Serve

Don’t aim at too small of a target. 2×2 feet is plenty, especially if your opponent is slow. Look how much ground your opponent has to cover if he is cheating toward the middle.

Achieving the perfect Kitchen Corner Serve necessitates a nuanced understanding of the playing field and an adaptable serving style. The first step? Positioning yourself close to the centerline. This positioning helps you create an angle that compels your opponent to move from their starting position. However, power isn’t the prime factor here; finesse and control are.

The Technique

The magic behind the Kitchen Corner Serve lies in the controlled grip and the artful use of a slice. A firm yet light grip on the paddle coupled with a gentle slice can make the ball spin away from your opponent upon bouncing. This technique, while seemingly simple, can put you in a favorable position in the point.

See how loose Pietra is? She is the master of deception. From this angle, it looks like she is lining up to hit the serve down the middle, but at the last minute, she changes the angle of the blade 3 degrees, and the ball lands right in the corner of the kitchen. Her serve is devastating!

When to Serve It

The Kitchen Corner Serve isn’t just for the routine, every point serve. It shines when your game starts becoming predictable and you need a curveball to keep your opponent guessing. It’s especially useful when your opponent leans toward the centerline or plays beyond the baseline. If your opponent has a tendency to stay put in a certain area, or you notice their slow reaction to long-reaching or fast shots, it’s time to whip out the Kitchen Corner Serve. This service works great in conjunction with the lob serve to keep your opponent guessing. If you have a slow opponent or one who likes to try and anticipate your serve, feed them a few lobs toward the center of the court. After three or four of these, you may notice them start to cheat a little to the center looking to attack a lob on the forehand. This is the moment your kitchen corner serve has been dreaming of, float a short serve out wide and I almost guarantee an ace or easy third shot putaway.
